Corporates use partners for security, says F-Secure chief

Karl Flinders, Computer Weekly

Corporates are buying more of their security products from service providers as IT directors struggle with skills shortages.

This was one of the observations of Kimmo Alkio, CEO at security supplier F-Secure, last week.

"More and more large organisations are buying their security products from service providers because of a skills shortage. IT directors are having real challenges finding competent staff with a high degree of technical knowledge," said Alkio.

He said the IT director will quite often turn to a partner in the form of an ISP or integrator for a security service.

Nick Garlick, managing director at security integrator Nebulas Security, which specialises in the financial services sector agreed.

"This year we have had more consultants on site with customers than ever before," he said.

He said the multi-faceted nature of security makes the acquisition of skills for in-house staff a costly exercise. "You can have the skills in one area but with security you need skills in different areas such as network security, content security and data security. This is very hard to provide in-house."
