Apple releases Java security updates

A pair of Java updates has been released by Apple this week affecting the company’s Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6. The Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2 is for the Snow Leopard platform, whereas the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7 affects users on the older Leopard system.

The Java patches released by Apple address numerous vulnerabilities that, according to the security update notifications, “may lead to arbitrary code execution with privileges of the current user” and in some cases application termination.

Apple did not elaborate on how these security holes are fixed exactly, and only said that the updates would provide “improved compatibility, security, and reliability”.
