EU to hold first pan-European cybersecurity exercise next month

Last month, the agency sponsored a “dry run” of the cybersecurity exercise, which included training on setup, policies, tools, and scenarios. The sessions involved moderators, who were split into moderator and player groups to provide an understanding of the exercise from “both sides of the river”, ENISA explained.

Commenting on Cyber Europe 2010, Vangelis Ouzounis, senior expert for IT security policies at ENISA, told the RSA security conference in London that the exercise is designed to encourage pan-European cooperation in defending critical infrastructure networks. “It’s basically a way of building trust among member states,” he was quoted by PC World as saying.

Ouzounis said it will be a table top exercise that will test how European countries respond in cooperating with each other and whether language will prove to be a barrier during an emergency. He explained that some European countries still do not have a national contact point or computer emergency response team.

At the end of September, the US held its third Cyber Storm exercise to kick off Cybersecurity Awareness month. Cyber Storm III included participants from seven US federal agencies, 11 states, 60 private companies, and 12 international partners.
