iPhone users get freedom from Apple log tracking with new app

Known as Untrackerd, the app has been coded by Ryan Petrich in direct response to news of the tracking log, and foils attempts by the Apple operating system (iOS) to record the device's position.

The slightly bad news is that Untrackrd is only available for unlocked iPhones and iPads, and is available for free on the Cydia market.

According to the Cydia description: "this package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure."

As the dust continues to settle on reports of the iPhone and iPad tracking its location and recording the data to a hidden log file, the 9to5Mac Apple news portal says that – contrary to earlier reports – it is not the GPS data that is being logged, but the triangulation data drawn from the nearest cellular base stations.

The data is being recorded – in an unencrypted format – to a file called consolidated.db, Infosecurity understands.

According to the CNet newswire, meanwhile, Untrackerd does not delete the consoliate.db file, but overwrites the data repeatedly with a sequence of zeros, to prevent any forensic recovery.

In an interview with CNet's Elinor Mills, Ryan Petrich said that he created the Untrackerd app because he was not comfortable with the entire history of his location being stored on a device that is very easy to lose.

Another tool, notes CNet – Location Blocker – goes further and wipes all historical data from the consolidated.db file and also blocks the device from storing any further cell and WiFi location data.
