BlackBerry poses security threat, says UAE

BlackBerry, made by Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM), is operating beyond the jurisdiction of national legislation, the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in the statement.

According to the authority, the way BlackBerry data is managed and stored means some BlackBerry applications allow people to misuse the service. This could cause serious social, judicial and national security repercussions, said the authority.

"The UAE is working to resolve these critical issues with the objective of finding a solution that safeguards our consumers and operates within the boundaries of UAE law", the statement said.

The statement comes after Gulf state Bahrain warned in April against using BlackBerry Messenger software to distribute local news.

The warning sparked concerns that other Gulf countries might also curb the use of some BlackBerry applications, according to the Wall Street Journal.
