McAfee bolsters mobile offerings by acquiring tenCube

30 July 2010

The world’s largest dedicated IT security firm became just a little bit bigger today, as McAfee announced plans to purchase tenCube, the privately owned provider of the WaveSecure mobile security service.

News of the latest McAfee purchase, during what Infosecurity can characterize as a rather brisk acquisition season, comes on the heels of the company’s late-May purchase of Trust Digital, another mobile security specialist.

Technology acquired by McAfee in the tenCube deal will include its WaveSecure offering, which provides remote locating, locking, back-up, and data wiping services. McAfee said its mobile security portfolio will now extend to several mobile operating systems, including Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPhone, and Java-powered devices.

One of the more intriguing features of the WaveSecure product, Infosecurity notes, includes access to personal data and files on lost mobile devices.

According to a company statement, McAfee hopes this latest purchase will provide it with the ability to offer both consumers and enterprise customers remote control capabilities over their mobile devices.

McAfee did not provide terms of the deal but expects it to close in August of this year.
