Lumension survey predicts ITsec trends for 2009

End of year research commissioned by enterprise endpoint security specialist Lumension has found that outsourcing is likely to be a major IT security talking point in 2009.

The study, carried out by the Ponemon Institute, also found that more than 75 per cent of IT security professionals noted cybercrime is a major issue - despite the industry's efforts to beat hackers in recent years.

Interestingly, the survey results highlighted an increase in shared thinking between traditionally disparate IT functions within the organisation - IT operations and IT security.

The main issues that ITsec professionals seem most concerned about as the industry prepares for Christmas and 2009 includes Cloud Computing and Server Virtualisation.

Other topics of worry include outsourcing to third parties, data breaches and the risk of identity theft.

Previous year worries also remain of concern, including P2P file sharing and the rise of Web 2.0 technology

The slightly bad news is that researchers found that data breaches and cybercrime are on the rise: Survey results indicated that the biggest concern relative to data loss is the threat of data making it into the hands of cyber thieves (46 per cent for IT security and 24 per cent for IT operations).

This security issue, says Lumension causes problems not just for the customers whose data is stolen but also on the organisations responsible for that lost data.

Survey participants reported that 92 per cent of their organisations have experienced a cyberattack in the last year.
