Check Point adds browser security to end point suite

14 July 2009

Check Point Software Technologies has released a new suite of end point software - R72 - to its range of software-based security offerings.

According to Caroline Ikomi, information security company Check Point's technical director, the main feature of the R72 software suite, which is designed for installation on remote desktop and laptop PCs, is the inclusion of a secure web browsing environment called WebCheck.

The WebCheck browser environment effectively creates a sandboxed area of the PC's memory and prevents any drive-by downloads, malware and extensible software attacks from breaking into the host PC if the user clicks through to an infected website for whatever reason.

The problem with many website infections, Ikomi said, is that it is usually the site that has been compromised, and not the company or its servers.

The end result, however, Check Point's technical director explained, is that visitors to a compromised website are then infected with malware or hit by a hacker attack.

"WebCheck, which is one of three key features of the new R72 suite, stops websites from compromising the user's PC."

Alongside the WebCheck secure browsing environment, R72 also features OneCheck, a single authentication system that Check Point claims will unlock all end point security subsystems.

The third building module in the suite is VPN Auto-Connect which, as the name implies, automatically connects users to their company VPN as and when required.

The aim of the R72 suite, said Check Point's Ikomi, is to make accessing the web and accessing company IT resources across the internet as secure, but easy to use, as possible.

In use, the OneCheck authentication system unlocks the endpoint security systems in active use, including Windows login, disk encryption, media encryption and VPN facilities, with a single login.

The new VPN Auto-Connect module, meanwhile, allows for uninterrupted connectivity for end-users as they move between LAN and wireless connections.

Ikomi told Infosecurity that the VPN Auto-Connect feature is especially useful when accessing a company VPN from a train or moving vehicle, when the mobile broadband connection can frequently drop the IP connection, for a number of reasons.

The Auto-Connect feature, she said, logs the user straight back in, as soon as the IP connection becomes available again.

"The result for the user is seamless and automatic VPN connectivity without the need to further connect or authenticate the session."

Other features of the R72 suite include an integrated firewall, program control, remote access, antivirus, anti-spyware, full disk encryption and media encryption with port protection.
