Online hotel fraud scamming 71 000 travellers a month

09 February 2009

FraudTip, a Web security portal, claims that an internet scam is defrauding around 71 000 travellers every month by the simple expedient of routing internet users to fraudulent versions of popular booking sites.

According to FraudTip, fake versions of hotel booking sites from the likes of Days Inn and Ramada, as well as Hyatt, TraveLodge and Comfort Inns, have appeared in recent weeks.

The scam sites are being promoted through the use of online advertising, third-party reservation systems and browser crimeware, says FraudTip, which notes that the problem is escalating.
