Microsoft withdraws security patch for Windows Media Services

26 April 2010

Microsoft has withdrawn a Windows 2000 Server security patch released on 13 April to fix a flaw in Windows Media Services.

According to the software maker, the patch does not address the underlying problem effectively and will still allow a hacker to plant malicious code in a Windows 2000 system running Media Services.

Microsoft said in a blog post the company was not aware of any attacks trying to exploit the flaw, and expected to release a replacement patch this week.

Until a new patch is released, Microsoft advised customers using Media Services to use firewall best practices to limit the risk of attack.
