Forrester reports popularity of identity and access management

The Forrester Research study – which took in responses from 700 IT decision-making professionals in France, Germany, and the UK – found that almost 60% cited improved security as the primary driver for adopting IAM, with the remaining two-fifths split between improved service delivery, regulatory compliance, cost reductions, and governance.

The survey also found that although European organisations feel that IAM needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, the implementation of even the most popular identity and access management technologies is distinctly underwhelming. The report – 'Identity And Access Management Adoption In Europe' – reveals that single sign-on (SSO) enjoys the highest level of adoption and interest from European enterprises.

Sixty-five percent of respondents said they either already have an enterprise SSO in place or have plans to implement it, compared with 60% for web SSO.

Privileged user management and provisioning, meanwhile, could hit 50% in the next few years. At 29%, Forrester says that privileged user management is - by a thin margin - the most widely adopted IAM technology at European enterprises.

Provisioning has lower current adoption, at 21%, but a further 30% have plans to implement it. Interestingly, researchers found that multifactor authentication (MFA) adoption is shockingly low, with only 20% of European enterprisesadopting MFA.
