Adobe releases security updates for Shockwave Player

The Shockwave Player, which allows users to view rich media content, has been installed by more than 450 million desktops according to Adobe. This latest security update for the media player tackles 20 different vulnerabilities that Adobe has identified as “critical”.

The security patch affects Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5.7.609 and earlier versions for both Windows and Mac, with the software maker asking users to update to its newest version – 11.5.8.612 – available on the Adobe website.

A security bulletin released by Adobe said the update resolves 18 vulnerabilities that could lead to hackers executing malicious code on an affected system, with two other denial of service vulnerabilities. Adobe believes that one of the DoS vulnerabilities could possible lead to “arbitrary code execution”.

An Adobe spokesperson told Infosecurity that none of the security fixes involve currently known exploits in the wild.
