HP Pivots Away From Network Security

HP has officially divested TippingPoint, its networking security business, to Trend Micro. The computing giant said that it is making a strategic pivot to a partnering strategy for network security, so that it can “invest in the areas of our security portfolio that most closely align with our overall strategy.”

After the $300 million deal closes, which is expected in the first quarter of fiscal 2016, HP plans to continue to partner with TippingPoint/Trend Micro as a strategic customer and partner in its enterprise services, networking and enterprise security products businesses. Meanwhile, as for in-house capabilities, HP will now focus in on threat intelligence, application security and data protection, and post-breach data recovery.

“We’re living in an age of continuous disruption driven by incredible growth and innovation,” said Sue Barsamian, SVP of enterprise security products, and Art Wong, SVP of global GM enterprise security services, in a blog. “The technologies enabling this disruption—cloud computing, mobility and big data analytics—also introduce new challenges for enterprise security as the potential attack surface significantly expands and adversaries become increasingly more sophisticated.”

They added, “This demands a new approach to security, one that goes beyond defending the traditional perimeter to one of protecting users, applications and data and securing the interactions between them regardless of location or device.”

HP will continue to invest heavily in threat intelligence research, including leveraging its more than 5,000 certified security professionals and security consultants that are tasked with assessing security maturity and building risk management strategies. It will also make use of its security information and event management (SIEM) platforms, specifically the HP ArcSight platform, which has a connected network of 400 technology alliance partners.

HP is also focusing in on application security and data protection with the HP Fortify and HP Data Security product lines, which with the acquisition of Aruba Networks will address integrated and secure network access for the mobile enterprise. Penetration testing and vulnerability management, identity and access management services and data loss protection and prevention will all be parts of the ecosystem, the company said.

And finally, the company will invest further in its HP Secure Access and Continuity Solutions to provide appropriate levels of backup and disaster recovery to safeguard data.

“With the upcoming transition to the new Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we are sharpening our focus on protecting the digital enterprise, investing in offerings that help customers protect users, applications and data and secure the interactions between them regardless of location or device,” said Barsamian and Wong.

They added, “Make no mistake, security is at the heart of our strategy for the new Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The pace of technology innovation shows no sign of slowing, and we are committed to leading the industry in both the solutions and services needed to protect the new digital enterprise.”
