Qualys completes purchase of Nemean Networks

Qualys announced it has wrapped up the acquisition of Nemean Networks, a firm that specializes in IPS/IDS technologies and malware detection. The IT security risk and compliance provider said it now owns the exclusive rights to all Nemean technology and patents. Further details on the purchase were not provided.

Nemean’s technology was developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison via grant support from the National Science Foundation, Army Research Office, and Dept. of Homeland Security. Nemean exclusively licensed four technology patents from the UW-Madison’s research.

The deal brings to Qualys IDS/IPS technology developed by the university, as well as a Honeynet system that gathers information on malware. Also part of the agreement, Paul Barford, CEO and founder of Nemean Networks, will become chief scientist at Qualys.

“With this acquisition, we are now expanding our malware and threat detection capabilities in a highly automated manner”, said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Qualys. “It is also our intention to build it into a global community effort to better fight increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.”
