Check Point extends security envelope to support data leak prevention

The two Check Point products are: MultiSpect, a classification engine that inspects traffic flow for all data in motion on a company's servers; and the SmartEvent Software Blade, a unified security management system that is billed as operating in real time.

According to officials with the IT security vendor, speaking this morning at the Check Point Experience 2010, the security vendor's annual customer/reseller event, MultiSpect includes pre-defined best practice policies that prevent exposure of personal or compliance-related data.

MultiSpect also introduces what Check Point claims to be a human security factor to data leak prevention (DLP), with users able to solve potential violations of security in real time using a technology that the company calls UserCheck.

In use, UserCheck is said to alert users with a pop-up window – or email – whenever data may be at risk, helping to resolve incidents before a data breach can occur, so saving on valuable IT time.

The SmartEvent Software Blade, meanwhile, is a unified security management system for real-time event visibility across multiple security systems including firewall, intrusion prevention, DLP and endpoints.

Infosecurity notes that SmartEvent builds on the initial release of the Software Blade technology that Check Point unveiled last year.

In use, SmartEvent filters the mass of daily threat logs and events, as well as highlighting critical events as they occur and giving security administrators the ability to stop attacks straight from the management interface.

According to Check Point, SmartEvent allows administrators to add protections on-the-fly to solve attacks quickly, such as implementing policy changes or blocking traffic from certain sources.

According to Gil Shwed, Check Point's founder and chairman, DLP has become a universal business challenge.

"At some point, we have all sent an e-mail with sensitive information to the wrong recipient. For the first time in the industry, Check Point solves the challenge of data leakage", he said.

"By combining innovative technology with our UserCheck remediation solution, Check Point DLP enables businesses to enforce corporate policies and educate users while preventing intentional and unintentional data loss", he added.
