Colt offers VMware's vCloud service in Europe

The deal will allow organisations to extend and migrate their own virtualised environment to a Colt datacentre, with Colt providing a VMware-certified cloud.

"Colt's delivery of the VMware vCloud datacentre service will utilise its wholly-owned network, data centres and managed services expertise to deliver a first class enterprise cloud offering, backed-up with business-level service level agreements (SLAs)", said Colt Managed Services MD Richard Oosterom.

Richard Oosterom said the partnership with VMware will be further enhanced as Colt extends its platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud services for the enterprise.

Oosterom said that for companies that had already virtualised, the next logical step was to deploy and scale their virtualised environments into cloud services with a trusted provider

VMware president and CEO Paul Maritz said the service improved enterprises' efficiency. Paul Maritz said it allowed organisations to tap into external resources in a non-disruptive way when it made business sense.

The Colt vCloud enterprise cloud will be available in November 2010 and across Europe in the first quarter of 2011.
