Ex-employees are a major threat to security - survey

Yet, when questioned, just 8% of the security survey respondents said they had effective processes in place for removing employee credentials and details from their IT systems.

34% of respondents to the security survey, which took in responses from 97 organisations, said that their processes were `very good' at removing employee details.

At the same time, just 4% confessed to not having any security credential removal process in place. Additionally, the IT systems distributor said, the findings also identified 2% of organisations were unsure of any issues.

Ed Callacher, Bell Micro's divisional director, said that, despite the research showing 94% of organisations have formal IT security processes in place regarding staff dismissal and redundancies, a staggering 92% admitted to having processes which are far from fully competent.

"These findings clearly show that there is still a need to educate the market", he said, adding that 19% of organisations openly say the security removal processes they have in place is poor is simply unacceptable.

Callacher went on to say that, despite the economy showing signs of improving, the market is still unstable and the risk of having a data security breach remains a threat for many organisations.
