F-Secure intros standalone smartphone anti-theft software

Known as F-Secure Anti-Theft for Mobile, the software includes three security security features to protect a smartphone: remote lock, remote wipe and theft control.

The application, which is available in two flavours - Symbian and Windows Mobile (Phone) - is billed as one of the most comprehensive on the market,

Remote lock protects confidential information quickly and easily by locking the device with a single SMS message. Theft control, meanwhile, activates if someone changes the SIM card by locking the device and informing the user remotely of the new number.

Last, but not least, Remote Wipe is said to be the ultimate safety measure, erasing all the data on the phone with a single remote SMS message sent from a specific number or F-Secure's headquarters.

Arnoud de Vaal, F-Secure's director at of mobile business, said that users carry their smartphone with them wherever they go, which means it can be particularly prone to being lost or stolen.

"Nowadays our mobiles contain a great deal of personal and confidential data that need protection. F-Secure's standalone anti-theft software provides an easy and affordable way to make sure this information is not misused by anyone," he said.

According to F-Secure, the software can be upgraded to the firm's premium offering, F-Secure Mobile Security, by activating an inbuilt automatic upgrade system within the package.

This, the company says, adds new security features to the solution for an additional fee.
