Football and hockey seasons off to a malicious start on web, says eSoft

eSoft says that the problem of compromised web pages is also rearing its ugly head when googling for less popular sports, such as hockey.

And as the US prepares for Thanksgiving, and baseball heads into the play-offs, the company's threat prevention team has noticed a significant increase in the number of compromised sports websites.

According to eSoft, the popular Fox Sports website was compromised on a fantasy baseball page that contained a hidden iFrame that retrieved content from the malicious site.

"The URL used for the attack was part of the Fantasy Baseball Hot Streak game," eSoft said in its threat blog.

"Hot Streak Fantasy Baseball users should check their machines for any signs of infection or malicious activity."

eSoft said it reported the malicious content to Fox Sports, but as of earlier this week, eSoft was "still detecting hacked pages being used to serve up viruses to Fox Sports visitors."

It's not just Fox Sports that has been hit by the problem as eSoft says that, when searching for "NHL all-time scoring leaders" in Google, half of the top ten search results were compromised or malicious websites.

These sites, when visited, caused the computers of visitors to be infected with information stealing viruses, the company said.
