The recently launched beta site for encrypted Google searches, https://www.google.com, apparently allowed users to bypass schools’ content filters. Google has tackled this problem by moving its encrypted (SSL) search to a new address – https://encrypted.google.com.
Google said in a blog posting that the change was necessary because many schools were blocking the encrypted search page, with the unintended consequence of also preventing access to legitimate Google educational apps via its secure URL.
Schools may still block the new encrypted search URL without affecting other online services that require secure connections said Google, and the company noted that it is also seeking a longer-term solution to the problem that would allow a return to the old SSL host name.
