(ISC)² Shakes Up US Government Advisory Council

(ISC)² has appointed eight new members to its US Government Advisory Council (USGAC).

This group of volunteer advisors provides insight and advice to the (ISC)² executive management team on government policies and programs that affect the cybersecurity profession and on certifications for US cybersecurity professionals. Additionally, it sponsors community outreach initiatives such as the (ISC)² Government Information Security Leadership Awards (GISLAs), the (ISC)² U.S. Government Advisory Council Executive Writers Bureau (GAC EWB) and the CyberSecureGov annual training event.

The diverse group of fresh council members will be introduced at the USGAC’s year-end meeting in Alexandria, Va., on December 8. They are as follows:

  • Devon Bryan, EVP and CISO at the Federal Reserve, and co-founder and president of the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals
  • Renee Forney, acting deputy CIO of cybersecurity, US Department of Energy
  • Stephanie Keith, chief of the Cyber Workforce Strategy & Policy Division, US Department of Defense
  • Shaun Khalfan, chief systems security officer, Customs and Border Protection, US Department of Homeland Security
  • Christopher Lowe, CISO, US Department of Agriculture
  • Christina Phibbs, lead cyber security engineer, MITRE Corp.
  • Michael Stoner, CISO, Civilian Agency
  • Leo Wong, CISO, the Federal Communications Commission

“Since 2003, (ISC)²’s advisory councils have provided in-depth insights into the needs of cyber, information, software and infrastructure security professionals and communities worldwide,” said Dan Waddell, USGAC chair, and (ISC)² managing director for North America and director of US Government Affairs. “We are at a unique time in the USGAC's history where many long-standing members have retired from government and must move off the Council, affording us the opportunity to fill these vacancies.”

The new members join the returning USGAC participants: Art Friedman, senior cybersecurity advisor at the National Security Agency; Pete Gouldmann, co-chair and acting CISO, IT Security Compliance, US Department of State; Mary Heard, senior advisor and director of Continuous Process Improvement, US Department of Agriculture; Patrick Kelly, lecturer, George Washington University; Sean Lang, CISO, Library of Congress; Chuck McGann Jr., chief cyber strategist for Salient CRGT; Leo Scanlon, acting CISO, US Department of Health and Human Services; Rocky Young, principal cyber security engineer, MITRE Corp.; and Waddell.

“I am confident in this group’s collective ability to represent the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce as we endeavor to build and nurture the rapid growth of cybersecurity within government,” Waddell said.
