The 13 board members, volunteers who are industry leaders from around the globe representing business, government and academia, are elected through a voting process each year among the organization’s membership. The board provides governance and oversight for the organization, grants certifications to qualifying candidates and enforces adherence to the (ISC)² Code of Ethics.
“Preparing the information security workforce with the necessary tools to combat today’s advanced cyber threats is a global challenge,” said Remes, in a statement. “Supporting our membership base in harnessing their strengths to overcome this challenge and to make the Internet a safer and more secure place for governments, businesses and citizens is the board’s top priority. I look forward to working with the board on a number of key initiatives this coming year. I strongly believe that this team is unified in its vision and its desire to have a positive impact.”
In his day job, Remes leverages his 15 years of security leadership experience to advise clients on reducing their risk posture by solving complex security problems and by building resiliency into their organizations. He also delivers expert guidance on reducing the high cost of IT security failures, both financially and in terms of brand reputation, with his deep expertise in network security, identity management, policy design, risk assessment and penetration testing. Before joining the IOActive team, Remes was a manager of information security for Ernst and Young and a security consultant for Bull.
As for the other officers, the vice chair on the board is Corey Schou, a professor of informatics, professor of information systems and associate dean for the computer information systems program at Idaho State University. He is also director of the National Information Assurance Training and Education Center (NIATEC) and the Informatics Research Institute (IRI). In addition, he is a founder and current chairperson of the National Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education. Schou is a recipient of the (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Lifetime Achievement Award.
Secretary Dave Lewis, global security advocate at Akamai Technologies, has more than 15 years of industry experience in IT operations and management. He is also a contributing analyst at Securosis, as well as the co-founder and director of OpenCERT Canada, the first nonprofit national computer emergency response team providing services to users within Canada. Previously, Lewis was a member of the information security practice at Advanced Micro Devices, and is the founder of the popular security site Liquidmatrix Security Digest. He has also worked for a defense contractor as a security consultant to clients such as the FBI, the US Navy, the Social Security Administration, the US Postal Service and the US Department of Defense.
Treasurer Greg Thompson is vice president of enterprise security services at Scotiabank Group in Toronto, and has 23 years of experience in industries ranging from telecommunications (circuit design & engineering) to financial services. Thompson has held various senior-level information security management positions over the years.
