The end of month analysis found that trojans detected as Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT were the chief detection with almost a third (29.08%) of the total.
According to Sunbelt Software, the sponsor of the survey, this particular trojan detection has been in the top spot for some time: in June with 27.16% and in May with 27.79% of the total detections.
Two other widespread detections, which made it into the top 10, were Trojan.Win32.Meredrop, with 1.01% of detections and Trojan.Win32.Generic!SB.0 (0.92%).
Trojan.Win32.Malware.a (0.84%) says the report, returned to the top-10 after a one-month hiatus.
Francis Montesino, Sunbelt Software's manager of malware processing, said that Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT is a generic risk that covers a lot of malicious applications. "About 120 000 traces are identified under that detection by VIPRE's signature-based, heuristic or behavioural mechanism", she noted.
Very often, she explained, this identifies the downloaders that are used with rogue security programs, also known as scareware.
"Once they are downloaded, the rogues pretend to scan your computer for malware then display false warnings that the machine is infected. They try to convince victims to purchase useless security software, that often contains more threats", she added.
