NIST website provides data on online trusted identities program

The website contains news on NSTIC, including the recent announcement about setting up a National Program Office to implement the strategy and to work with industry to develop a national online identity system for US citizens.

In addition, there are quick links to the White House’s Cyberspace Policy Review; a recent NSTIC panel discussion involving Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt, and industry and academic leaders in Silicon Valley; a FAQs section; and a blog area.

In the FAQs section, NIST stresses that the online trusted identities system will not involve issuing a national cyber ID card. Rather, people who want a national online “credential” will be able “to choose among multiple identity providers –both private and public – and among multiple digital credentials.”

NIST also explained that the new National Program Office will perform the following fuctions regarding NSTIC: promote private sector involvement and engagement with its implementation; build consensus on the legal and policy frameworks necessary to achieve its vision; work with industry to identify where new standards or collaborative efforts may be needed; support interagency collaboration and coordinate interagency efforts; assesess progress against the goals, objectives, and milestones; and promote online identify pilot projects.
