The event was opened by former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq, and is billed as the Norton Cybercrime Index, linked to the internet as well as via the latest version (5.0) of the Norton 360 security application.
According to Symantec - which has posted a video of the event launch on YouTube - the event is being backed by consumer risk management firm ID Analytics, and DataLossDB, a research project from the Open Security Foundation, who are both providing data about identity fraud and data loss, respectively.
In parallel with staging the week-long event at the Westfield centre, Symantec is recommending that internet users should be careful with their social media postings.
Cybercriminals, says the company, have been known to employ social engineering tactics by using information gleaned through your digital self, such as your preferred hangout spots and favourite hobbies to gain your trust before they scam you.
Internet users should also look for visual cues that identify safe websites, such as a padlock or the address bar turning green to show the site is a genuine one.
Interestingly, Symantec is also now advising internet users to safeguard their email address. "There's nothing wrong with being an active social networker. However, leaving your e-mail address in comments or making it available on your blog or social networking profile leaves you even more susceptible to spamming", says the company.
