Russian Hackers Leak Simone Biles, Serena Williams Medical Records

A Russian APT group known as Fancy Bear has leaked confidential medical information for US Olympic gymnastics star Simone Biles as well as Serena Williams.

In August the group— well known for APT activities around the world—claimed responsibility for the hack of a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) database. The new leak is from a second hack, of a database that contains records detailing "Therapeutic Use Exemptions", which allows the use of banned substances due to athletes' verified medical needs.

The docs don’t show that the athletes “doped”. They do suggest Biles has ADHD and takes medication for that, and that Williams was treated with CORTICOsteroids for injuries.

As the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency explains, “The TUE application process is thorough and designed to balance the need to provide athletes access to critical medication while protecting the rights of clean athletes to compete on a level playing field.”

WADA said the hack was likely in revenge for its decision to recommend the IOC ban all Russian athletes at the Rio Games.

“Let it be known that these criminal acts are greatly compromising the effort by the global anti-doping community to re-establish trust in Russia," WADA director-general Olivier Niggli said in a public statement.

Fancy Bear also said that it will release confidential records from other national Olympic teams.
