Symantec has acquired LiveOffice, a provider of cloud-based email archiving products, for $115 million.

Symantec said the acquisition of LiveOffice provides its customers a cloud-based messaging product that includes anti-spam, security, continuity, archiving, compliance, and eDiscovery. The company plans to integrate LiveOffice with its recently acquired Clearwell eDiscovery platform.

Torrance, Calif.-based LiveOffice has more than 20,000 customers in 50 countries. Symantec said it will continue to offer the LiveOffice archiving service as a standalone offering. Symantec had an existing OEM relationship with LiveOffice in providing its Enterprise Vault.cloud offering.

In a blog about the LiveOffice acquisition, Brian Dye, vice president of Symantec’s Information Intelligence Group, said that the main driver for the purchase is to expand its enterprise data offerings into the cloud. “To enable that move of enterprise data to the cloud, the archive needs to as well. That is one of the reasons that Symantec is pleased to announce the acquisition of LiveOffice, as part of our commitment to help customers support intelligent information governance in a form factor that makes sense for them.”

Dye said his company acquired LiveOffice for two reasons: “First, we see a tremendous opportunity to leverage the resources of Symantec to better reach, support and deliver integrated solutions to our customers. Those integrations can be not only supporting information governance as discussed here, but also providing a complete cloud mail protection solution. Second, we have come to know the LiveOffice organization well through our OEM relationship and see a strong cultural fit between our teams’ DNA, standard of excellence, and customer focus.”
