Symantec teams up with LifeLock to expand offline

The joining of Symantec's Norton IT security brand with that of LifeLock's will see the promotional bundling of offline and online identify theft protection, as well as the usual suite of security features, including anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall and anti-spam technologies.

For the time being, the link-up between Symantec and LifeLock - which is being described as a strategic partnership - will be for the US only, although it could eventually expand to other countries.

Announcing the partnership, Janice Chaffin, Symantec's group president of consumer business, said that today's malware has become more intrusive, more stealthy and more focused on financial gain.

"There are a variety of ways cyber-criminals can compromise your identity and finances in the real world," she said, adding that online security is a great first line of defense, but the best offline offense is to guard your identity, your money and your credit with identity theft protection.

"In partnership with LifeLock, we want to provide consumers with the tools they need to better safeguard themselves in both worlds."

LifeLock's CEO Todd Davis said that people's identity and financial information are more vulnerable than ever before.

"People need to protect themselves and their wallets no matter if they're in a crowded public place or shopping online from home," he explained.

"Symantec and LifeLock represent two sides of the security and identity protection coin and we feel that in combining our core competencies, we have a unique solution to an increasingly alarming problem," Davis said.

Under the promotional deal now reaching retailers across the US, consumers who purchase a limited edition box of Symantec's Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus retailers will be offered a free 30-day LifeLock. service, 10% off a membership subscription and two free movie tickets,

To claim the free subscription, a credit or debit card will be needed, and cancellation within 30 days by calling 1-800-Lifelock will avoid the charged.

And as part of its Back-to-School promotion, customers will receive 20% off when purchasing Symantec's Norton 360 and a LifeLock membership through September 30 this year. This deal is available through US retailers, as well as online from today onwards.
