The 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, 10th Edition, Verizon Enterprise Solutions found that ransomware incidents climbed from the 22nd most common malware attack in 2014 to the 5th most common in 2017.1 The report also found that email surpassed web drive-by downloads as the top malware vector in 2017. Global ransomware damage costs are predicted to exceed $5 billion in 2017, up from $325 million in 2015.
