Encryption is terrific in theory. Data stays protected, and confidential information remains locked away from the wrong eyes. In reality, compliance requires resources, and encryption can constitute its own piece of that cost pie. Encryption may entail purchasing hardware and software, hiring a consultant, adding layers of data management, and more. That said, is it possible to go overboard and encrypt more than necessary? Certainly.
