Kensington unveils iPhone and iPad security protection technology

Rather than simply bolt the mobile device to a desk using a physical cable, the firm has developed a set of offerings that include a lightweight tether – SecureBack – and a wireless alarm fob system called BungeeAir, which sets off a fob-based alarm if the iOS-based device moves beyond a certain range.

According to Kensington, whilst iPads and iPhones were initially positioned as consumer devices, both products are making fast inroads in corporate computing environments.

The increased portability of tablets and smartphones, says the firm, means that they are more vulnerable to loss or theft. And with that vulnerability comes more risk that sensitive corporate data could be lost or breached and greater financial impact from lost productivity.

Whilst SecureBack is what you would expect from Kensington, the BungeeAir system is interesting in that it creates a wireless connection between an iPhone and a fob by triggering an alarm when a specified distance is crossed.

The fob, says the firm, can be attached to a keychain or placed in a pocket or purse, so if an iPhone is inadvertently left on a table, desk or airplane, or if it is taken, an alert will sound. The BungeeAir software is password-protected and distances, adds Kensington, can be set to a users's requirements, making protection easy and personalised.

Announcing the new iPhone and iPad security systems, Stephen Hoare, Kensington's marketing and security business development director, said that business and their staff are increasingly reliant on mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads, meaning that physically protecting them from theft and loss is rapidly moving up IT departments' priority lists.

“Our two new product lines – BungeeAir and SecureBack – build on our strengths in laptop security to provide simple and safe ways of securing these mobile devices, wherever they are being used”, he said.

“This not only protects against the financial and productivity costs of lost devices, but safeguards confidential and customer information, de-risking mobile working for businesses”, he added.

UK pricing for the SecureBack range starts at £44.99 and BungeeAir Power at £99.99.
