Vodafone develops encrypted password vault for smartphones

Vodafone has revealed it is developing a secure and encrypted data / password vault for smartphones. Known as Keeper Mobile, the encryption technology will be released by the mobile carrier's operations worldwide by the end of the year.

Central to the encryption technology - which will be downloadable from Vodafone's forthcoming mobile application service - is a highly secure environment developed by CallPod, a Chicago-based company that the carrier has contracted to develop the secure encryption software.

CallPod said that Keeper's user-friendly interface allows users to fully search, index and protect information with military-grade encryption.

According to CallPod, Keeper Mobile has been released in beta versions for the Apple iPhone and Google Android handsets. The Vodafone edition will see the encryption software extended to many more smartphones.

Craig Lury, CallPod's chief technology officer, said that today's consumers need to do everything they can to keep important information as safe as possible.

"Keeper uses one of the most powerful encryption tools in the world to prevent against thieves and hackers", he said.

A key feature of the encryption software will be the ability to securely replicate data between a desktop PC and the smartphone using a variety of wireless network topologies and 128-bit encryption.

The client environment for the desktop will cost US$14.95, whilst the mobile version will be offered free by Vodafone.
