Forrester Research says iPhone now secure enough for enterprise deployments

Now a report from Forrester Research says that, as a result of enhancements to the iPhone operating system, the iPhone has come of age for enterprise deployments.

As a result, the research firm says that almost 30% of North American and European enterprises now support the iPhone - and by extension the iPad - and its adoption can only continue to grow.

The report - Apple's iPhone and iPad: Secure Enough For Business?' - lays down seven basic policies every enterprise should implement.

The seven policies include the requirement for encryption of email sessions, as well as mandatory wiping of devices that are lost or stolen and the protection of devices with a passcode lock.

The report also recommends that devices should be set to autowipe after a number of failed access attempts, and that the configuration profile of the device be locked against third-party access.

By continually refreshing security policies, the report says that the iPhone can satisfy the basic security needs of most enterprises.

And with the addition of basic security principles such as the requirement for staff to notify the IT department if the device is lost or stolen - or if the employee no longer needs connectivity to company resources - secure enterprise deployments of the iPhone are possible.

According to the report's author - Forrester analyst Andrew Jaquith - enterprises should feel comfortable using Apple's devices in the workplace.

But it's not all plain sailing, as he says that some enterprises require higher levels of authentication assurance, resistance to attack, manageability, and logging than the iPad or iPhone can provide.

"For these customers, Research In Motion's BlackBerry still rules the roost", he said.
