Spiceworks IT systems management is free on the iPhone

As with the desktop application - which has several million users - the iPhone edition is freeware, and is funded by adware.

Early reports from the firm's software forums indicate that the software - which allows IT staff and their managers to perform systems management, inventory, and helpdesk operations on the smartphone - has been a success with its users.

According to Spiceworks, its iPhone app can be used to monitor, manage and report on software and hardware assets. In use, the app is billed as auto-discovering Windows, Unix, Linux and Mac OS X machines along with other IP-addressable devices such as routers, VOIP phones, printers, etc.

Other features of the app include full management of Spiceworks help-desk tickets, details of employee contact information and a variety of other information.

The company has posted a helpful video of the app in use on YouTube and, despite its freeware status, says it is offering full support for the package.

Infosecurity notes that the app only runs on the iPhone at present, and requires iOS 4.0 or later, but versions for other iOS devices are reportedly in the pipeline.
