Android smartphones get more secure as software is released

Trend Micro is first out of the gate with Mobile Security for Android, which is billed as protecting Android devices from web threats and cybercriminals.

The IT security vendor says that Android is the second largest mobile platform on the market today with a growth rate of over 850%.

As with most of Trend's latest IT security software, Infosecurity notes that the Android edition uses a cloud-based approach to security, with the bulk of the security work being carried out in the cloud.

Carol Carpenter, Trend Micro's general manager of consumer and small business, said that the Android edition builds on the Windows Mobile 2003 and Smart Surfing iPhone application.

"With the Android platforms rapid growth, cybercriminals will be rushing to take advantage of these mobile devices anyway they can. Trend Micro Mobile Security highlights our continuing goal of protecting our customers anytime, on any device", she said.

Over at Kaspersky Lab, meanwhile, Peter Beardmore, the firm's director of product marketing, was at CES last week telling reporters about the firm's plans for Android.

In a video news report posted on the V3 newswire over the weekend, Beardmore said that the biggest challenge for Kaspersky is to have products available for the raft of new platforms that are coming out.

He added that Kaspersky Lab will be announcing an Android app at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event next month.

"The next step [for the industry] is how do you rationalise protection across multiple platforms in the home", he said, adding that it is key to have the same level of protection across all devices.

He also revealed that the next step will see the expansion of IT security on a controlled basis across the network.

"This is going to be a big focus going forward", he noted.
