The Windows Mobile 6.5 software will be installed on new Windows phones that launch on 6 October.
In Europe, phones operating Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available from Orange and Vodafone, as well as phone manufacturers Acer, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba.
The software giant has ground to make up in the mobile OS market, with competitors such as Apple selling millions of iPhones and device manufacturers choosing to run machines on the Google Android operating system.
Using a Windows mobile will enable Microsoft's millions of desktop OS users to use the same applications as they do on their PC, such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Version 6.5 of the operating system has improved browsing capabilities and introduced an easier-to-use interface.
It has also introduced services for users. These include one that makes applications available for direct download to Windows phones from Windows Marketplace for Mobile. It will also provide a free service called My Phone that allows customers to automatically back up and sync photos, music, contacts and text messages from their phone to the web.
"A Windows phone gives people a single phone that works for their whole life, keeping them connected to the people and information they care most about by harnessing the power of the PC, phone and web," said a Microsoft press statement.
