Fortinet ships secure email appliances

15 December 2009

Unified threat management company Fortinet is shipping two new secure email appliances. The appliances, called FortiMail-5001A and -2000B, are aimed at high-volume carrier and managed service provider companies.

The 5001A is the highest-volume system yet shipped by Fortinet, and is designed as a blade system that fits inside Fortinet's Fortigate-5000 chassis. It runs full anti-spam and anti-virus operations on 1.1 million email messages per hour, the company said,

The 20008 secure email appliance ships in a rack format. It can support up to 50 000 users with its anti-spam and anti-virus capabilities, and will suit large enterprise environments, Fortinet said. It offers 2Tb of storage, upgradable to 6Tb.

Fortinet's products are designed to clean email of spam, spyware, malware, and other messaging-related threats.
Both of the systems come with a new version of the FortiMail operating system, which includes gateway-to-gateway S/MIME encryption, and a rebuilt web-based manager with an enhanced user interface. The operating system is available as a free upgrade to registered contract holders, and is not paid for on a per-user or per-domain basis, Fortinet stressed.

This has been a big season for Fortinet. The company recently priced its initial public offering at $12.50 per share, a brave move in an economy that is still rebounding from a financial crisis. The company exercised an over-allotment option when the underwriters decided to buy more shares.
