Streufert takes over as DHS National Cybersecurity Division chief

Streufert previously worked as the State Department's chief information security officer and deputy chief information officer for information assurance. At State, Streufert oversaw implementing the Trusted Internet Connection Initiative and the Einstein network intrusion detection program.

This marks the first appointment by Mark Weatherford, who became deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity at DHS’s National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) in October following the departure of Phil Reitinger to join Sony as its first chief information security officer.

Following Reitinger’s departure, DHS split his job into two deputy undersecretary positions – one for cybersecurity, which was filled by Weatherford, and one for everything else the directorate handles, a post filled by Suzanne Spaulding.

The National Cybersecurity Division is part of the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications under the NPPD and falls under Weatherford’s purview.

“In his new role, John will continue to build and maintain an effective national cyberspace response system and implement a cyber-risk management program for the protection of critical infrastructure, such as dams and transportation. He will also work to maintain and strengthen our collaborations with public, private and international entities to secure the nation’s critical cyber infrastructure”, Weatherford said in a blog.

In addition, DHS announced that Rear Admiral Mike Brown is leaving his post as director of cybersecurity coordination in the NPPD. Brown is retiring from the Navy after a 32-year career.
