The university said that a database with personal information of individuals who submitted housing contracts to live in residence halls between 1997 and 2011 may have been compromised. The University of North Florida said the information could have been accessed as early as spring 2011.
The university police department, in conjunction with the university’s housing and information technology services, is investigating the incident. So far, the investigation has not uncovered evidence that the information was accessed by unauthorized individuals.
The University of North Florida said it is “constantly reviewing and updating information technology security systems and procedures. However, security technology is constantly changing, which means cyberspace intruders are finding new ways to compromise systems.”
This is the second major data breach at the university in as many years. In October 2010, the university admitted to a data security breach that compromised personal information, including social security numbers, of more than 100,000 individuals, the First Coast News reported.
