Panda powers introduces cloud IT security with free desktop application

The cloud security software has been on beta test since April of this year, since when Panda Security has been testing the application amongst an increasing number of users.

Infosecurity notes that the software parks itself as an overlay application occupying around 20 MB of system memory, monitoring all interactions of the TCP/IP stack at the operating system level.

The software is deceptively small as it relies on a cloud resource maintained by Panda Security called the Collective Intelligence database.

According to Panda, after almost six months of beta testing, the database is already around 25 terabytes in size, with 48 million files at its heart.

Available in 11 languages, Panda Cloud Antivirus runs under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

In use, the cloud security application uses a number of memory tricks - such as cache optimisation and memory management - to keep its footprint small and allow updates with the Collective Intelligence database every six minutes.

Panda has opened a forum to support the new software.
