Discover, Heartland come to terms over data breach claims

The accord between Heartland and Discover was announced today, with the payment processor agreeing to shell out $5 million in compensation for the highly publicized data breach.

Heartland fell victim to a criminal cybergang led by the now-notorious hacker Albert Gonzalez, who in March was sentenced to 20 years in prison for this and similar network intrusions affecting Heartland and numerous other retail merchants.

The Princeton N.J.-based payment processor has previously settled similar claims with other major card issuers for damages related to the data breach, including MasterCard, Visa, and American Express.

“We are pleased to have reached an equitable settlement with Discover”, said Heartland CEO Robert Carr in a press release statement. “This settlement marks our final agreement with a card brand related to the intrusion.”
