The dangers of smart devices and mobile applications

The ‘consumerization of IT’ has endured as a theme among IT security professionals for quite some time. And it appears that the problem is only becoming more complex, as device manufacturers continue to roll out more and more gadgets that employees want to use at work, as well as at home.

But as that old bulky BlackBerry gets replaced by sleek iPhones and iPads, where do the security risks lie? Are the operating systems secure? Do these new devices have adequate security features? And what about mobile applications and their potential to harbor malware-ladden code? It’s these questions and more that will be addressed by Justin Clarke, president of the London chapter of the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) and executive director of Gotham Digital Science.

After Clarke discusses the rather high-level threats out there, Chris Wysopal of Veracode will share with the audience his Top Ten mobile app security risks unveiled during April’s Infosecurity Europe show in London. Wysopal will put all of the major application stores head to head and give IT pros the skinny on how each one operates from a security perspective.

In addition to outlining the risks involved with smartphones and mobile applications, these two experts will provide sound solutions to mitigate the associated threats against what seems to be overwhelming clamor to use them in the workplace.
