Cisco moves into security and unified communications

30 January 2009

Cisco continued its diversification away from its mainstream networking roots this week with the release of a range of security, storage and unified communications offerings for small businesses.

The new products form part of the company's stated intention to invest $100 million in the small business end of the marketplace via its Small Business Technology Group operation.
The offerings include:
The Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker - an appliance billed as protecting a business' network and data from viruses plus malicious email attacks, whilst reducing the level of spam.
The Cisco NSS2000 and NSS3000 Network Storage Systems - these are desktop network-attached storage devices to secure and protect data, as well as allowing employees to share information.
The Cisco Smart Business Communications System (SBCS) Release 1.4 - a collaboration and communications system that connects offices, employees and customers, and includes a wireless desktop IP phone with Bluetooth facilities.
The company claims its Spam & Virus Blocker technology features an accuracy level of one in one million false positives.
The Cisco NSS2000 and NSS3000 storage devices, meanwhile, are billed as allowing firms to automatically back up every version of every file from every PC and server on their network.
This allows companies to comply with regulatory and governance rules such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
