Apple issues Mac OS X update to remove fake AV MacDefender malware

The rogue AV software – which reports bogus security issues and offer to fix them for a fee with the aim of getting a victim's credit card details – has spread rapidly in the past month.

"In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove MacDefender malware and its known variants," Apple says on its support page. "The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware."

Apple posted instructions on how to avoid installing the MacDefender malware. Apple also advises how to remove MacDefender malware from an affected computer.

The move comes after the MacDefender fake AV shot to the top of complaints in online forums and calls to Apple support staff.
