Firm develops non-jailbreak iPhone unlock solution

The as-yet unnamed unlocking solution isn't cheap, selling for $169 per handset, but is claimed to be permanent and allows future updates of the iOS operating system for the iPhone.

According to the company, the 'official iPhone unlock' does not void a users' handset warranty, which some newswires have observed may suggest the firm has access to Apple's IMEI unlocking database.

The IMEI – the handset's serial number – is used by cellcos and Apple itself to register which carrier a handset is assigned to. In the case of SIM-free handsets, which carry a premium, only Apple maintains a record and its database flags the handset accordingly.

The 9to5mac newswire reports that the iPhone Dev-team – which has produced a number of jailbreaking solutions – is endorsing the $169 unlock service.

Citing a report on the Macstories.net portal, the newswire speculates that CutYourSim "must have found a way to access Apple's database that holds unique IMEI numbers."

"It's highly unlikely they hacked Apple's own database, but they could have accessed it from a carrier's online backend", the wire added.

"From there, it's a simple matter of whitelisting your device's IMEI, which removes the lock on your device. If that's the case, something tells me Apple will soon ask its carriers to tighten their online security in order to prevent unauthorized IMEI whitelisting. They might also send their legal sharks after CutYourSim", the newswire concluded.
