This is despite US government officials being at pains to stress they were not pointing the finger of blame at anyone when the systematic hacks took place back in the spring, Infosecurity notes.
Reporting on the issue, the New York Times says that the Google hacking was part of a coordinated campaign of computer sabotage carried out by government operatives, private security experts and internet outlaws recruited by the Chinese government.
As reported earlier this year, Google announced it was no longer following the Chinese government's instructions to filter searches for sensitive material, after what it called 'co-ordinated cyberattacks' against its systems.
The hacking reportedly also included unauthorised access of the Gmail accounts of a number of Chinese dissidents.
At the time, whilst many industry observers were suggesting that the Chinese government was responsible, the US government took the view that, without evidence, the hacking incidents were probably down to pro-Chinese sympathisers.
The WikiLeaks saga also took an unexpected twist on Sunday afternoon UK time when WikiLeaks complained its servers were being bombarded by a sustained distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.
WikiLeaks said in a message on the Twitter microblogging service that it was under a cyber attack, but stressed this would not stop the publication of classified US documents.
"We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack", said a tweet just hours before the expected mass release of the leaked documents.
Earlier, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange had said the US authorities were afraid of being held to account, adding that the release of classified messages sent by US embassies will be bigger than past releases on Afghanistan and Iraq.
"The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world", Assange told reporters by video link on Sunday, said the BBC.
