US email archiving software comes to the UK

Developed by Stimulus Software, a privately held company headquartered in Houston, Texas, MailArchiva is billed as an email archiving system for companies of all sizes.

Steve Cornish, Security IP's account manager, said that MailArchiva was originally developed as an open source application, but has been extended and converted into a pay-for package to offer client companies the backup and support they need.

Designed to work in conjunction with all popular email systems such as Microsoft Exchange, MailArchiva Enterprise archives, compresses and encrypts all incoming, outgoing and internal emails. The software is also said to support search and retrieval, as well as auditing and email recovery.

All emails are stored directly on the file system, as opposed to a database, which Cornish said means there are no hidden database maintenance costs and the integrity of archived information is not subject to database corruption.

The software is billed as using a scalable search engine technology and a Google-like web interface, allowing auditors and employees to search through tens of millions of emails at the click of a button.

In use, the software supports a clean install that typically takes approximately 30 minutes and provides rapid access to documentation at all times with very little administrative effort.

Cornish said that MailArchiva is cost effective and easy to use because no third-party software is required, so eliminating the cost and complexity associated with purchasing and managing an application server or database.

"Thanks to MailArchiva's stubbing feature, end users don't need to compromise on their familiar Outlook user experience."

Infosecurity notes that - unusually - the software is available in two editions: Open Source Edition (OSE) and Enterprise Edition (EE).

The Open Source Edition is entirely free to use and modify as users see fit.

The Enterprise Edition includes more advanced features such as stubbing, email retention and email compliance policies, as well as digital signing of the archive.

Other features include audit logs to aid compliance, support for multiple mail systems, automatic verification of archive integrity and server monitoring.
