Cisco embraces the iPhone – secure corporate mobility at last?

In fact, according to Cisco, Apple's financial results for Q3 of 2010 show that than 80% of Fortune 100 companies - and 60% of Fortune 500 companies - are deploying or piloting the iPhone.

In use, Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Solution for Apple iOS 4.1 is billed as supporting an always-on VPN capability for Windows PCs, since it Apple iOS' native facility to provide on-demand VPN connections and generate a secure VPN/IP tunnel.

Interestingly, Cisco has supported 256-bit AES encryption using SSL or DTLS tunnelling, as well as invoking persistent application access, which means that a VPN session can `roam' automatically between a GSM/3G and a WiFi connection.

This auto-roaming facility is similar to the one seen on Check Point's VPN features on its remote security access software, Infosecurity notes.

Other features of the free iPhone app include access to internal IPv4 and IPv6 network resources, and RADIUS, ESA SecurID, Active Directory/Kerberos, LDAP and multi-factor authentication systems.

According to Shalabh Mohan, Cisco's director of the firm's security technology business unit, the app allowing users to enhance productivity on the go, whilst giving enterprises the ability to easily manage the security risks inherent to borderless networks.

"The iPhone has rapidly become a device of choice for consumers around the world, and they are looking for ways to have this single device work for both their personal and business needs", he said.

"The consumer influence is driving the need for highly secure enterprise mobility solutions like AnyConnect and our new iPhone app", he added.

Cisco has posted a useful video of the iPhone app being deployed and used here.
